We will be using watercolour and soft pastelfrominitialsketches. Loose washes are introduced to be enhanced with softpastel in the final stages of the painting,giving the opportunityto strengthen areas that mayrequirefurther attention.

An opportunity to develop a wide range of subjects and techniques, both simple and challenging, with subjects such as flowers, fruit, birds, animals, fish, and landscape. More advanced students will be able to explore their own compositions. In the evenings we will relax with a selection of appropriate videos and slides.

Some colours seem more difficult to work with than others. We will explore various techniques of colour manipulation in the context of plant illustration.

Most people are familiar with the illustrative style of Fantasy Art and this is your chance to have a go. You will delve into the technique of glazing to achieve subtle and smooth shading. Figurative work and skin tones are not difficult; you will be stunned by what you can achieve with this easy technique. You will explore interesting backgrounds to create mood and atmosphere by experimenting with wet in wet, salt, scumbling and splattering.

Learn about structure, proportions, how to achieve a likeness and how to place a portrait within a setting. A model will sit throughout.

Students will develop drawing skills by working directly from both male and female life models. The all-important techniques of form, proportion, light and tone will be explored through practical studies and demonstrations.

For experienced students who wish to go beyond the first stage course and learn more advanced watercolour methods including both classic and experimental techniques. There will be projects designed to produce exciting individual results, as a foundation for future work, as well as demonstrations.
